It is not often that a play surprises me. Particularly to the degree this does. Good characters are flawed, excellent characters are very flawed. There are five characters in this story and they are all in love with each other. Its more of a love...pentagon? The basics of the plot are that a couple who love each other but are not entirely ready for a child discover that they are pregnant (or rather she is). Of course, this is complicated that the would be father's reaction is immediately somewhat hostile, and this concerns her greatly. Moreover, he has a novel that needs selling and she is the provider for the family and the stress over income causes...tension. To say the least.
Still, while the first act builds up a shot gun to each of their heads, and it is pulled off of the wall, whom shoots who in what room and in what order, not to mention Col Mustard in the Billiard Room was quite unexpected. And it works.
I would highly recommend seeing this if you get a chance. The version I saw at On Stage Atlanta was very well done, not only in writing but in the rather astonishing breadth of spectrum put out by those who performed in it. There is chemistry and lack of chemistry at exactly the right moments. It has a genuineness that such a piece demands.
And you have only four more opportunities to see it.
