Short: Google wants me to login to watch a trailer to "Protect the Community." Yeah right.
Medium: The idea that the most ad based monopsony in the world wants me to log in to protect "the community" is laughably ludicrous. What's actually happening is every company is busy enshitifying the internet as fast as they can; the latest reason is to prevent people from scrapng the internet. You know, how Google was created in the first place?
Maximum Verbosity: I recently downloaded and archived all my data from google or I wouldn't even be writing this. My youtube channel has been deliberately shoved to the back corner of the internet because it's Progressive, Anti-Capitalist and Anti-Tech and Google has decided to go in the opposite direction. The original "Don't Be Evil" company has now become the new Microsoft; a giant company that leverages its corporate monopoly to crush the competition and silo and stranglehold just like any other Robber Baron or as they call them now "Vassal company" (a term I love because its the exact opposite the high and mighty tech lords want to pretend they are; but that's what they are, lame little fuedal lords bowing and scraping to the master.)
Anywho, the point here is that youtube used to be a place where you could upload a video and people could watch it. Then youtube needed to turn a profit and then they inserted more ads. Then they inserted more ads. Then more ads. More ads, even more ads; you get the idea. Now they have automated their moderation because they are lazy fucks; but that moderation causes a lot of abuse. Mainly, right wing Russian and American vigilantes make a habit of filing false DMCA claims (warning fucktube link). Google does nothing.
Google only acts when a metaphorical "unliving" tool (we're not using the nono word because ai might literally shut this post down and might even do it otherwise because the tech companies do what they want and who is going to stop them? The Republicans? The Democrats? They both work for Big Tech which makes Big Tobacco look like a kindergartner). The point is, most people know that youtube has gotten more and more and more suck; but now because they dont want people using youtube videos to train competitor's AI; google has locked the internet. Of course, what people don't realize is that LLM's existed long before ChatGPT. That's right boy's and girls....Google invented the LLM and then Microsoft Xeroxed them when ChatGPT went into their dumpster and took out the LLM and brushed it off and then Microsoft said hooboy hells yes and started the AI race that is ruining the internet, our lives, our jobs and the economy.
The long and the short of it is boy's and girls; the one thing Google most definitely is not doing is "Protecting the community" in any way shape or form. It's protecting their turf for their own piece of the enshitiffication AI race.
